Quilts of Valor are presented to local Veterans

On Monday, August 8th, 2022 the Calico Capers Quilt Guild hosted their annual picnic with the theme of SALUTE TO THE RED WHITE & BLUE.  This event was held at the Endeavor/Moundville Fire Station Hall, Endeavor.

The Opening Ceremony was presented by the Westfield VFW Post 8718 with the Honor Guard; National Anthem; Pledge of Allegiance and Prayer.

The picnic followed the opening with everyone enjoying the lovely meal served by the Calico Capers Quilt Guild members.  The collection for the Charity of Giving (Care & Share Food Bank/Marquette County) gleaned 74 lbs. of donated cleaning supplies & personal care items.

The program for the evening, Quilts of Valor Foundation, started with a brief overview of the QOVF from the State of Wisconsin Coordinator, Karen Demaree.  A Quilt of Valor® (QOV) is a quality, handmade quilt that is machine or hand quilted. It is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has been touched by war.  The quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.”

Seven nominations came this year from the Westfield VFW Post 8718 and one from a CCQG spouse.  The CCQG had all of the quilts made especially for this event ready for the August 8th ceremony.

Presented with QOV quilts were Thomas Abrams (CCQG member’s spouse) and Westfield VFW Post 8718 members: Lee Acker; Ken Elmer; William Fletcher; Dan Janke; Dennis Leist; Edwin Nelson & Larry Schaff.

At the conclusion of the Quilt of Valor Award Ceremony, there was the presentation of a Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin to each of the eligible individuals.
