County Fair activities raise $2,017 for food bank
This year’s fair brought many new events and people to the fairgrounds – one such “event” was a fundraising drive to benefit the Marquette County Care and Share food bank. The Marquette County Youth Organization Association presented Sylvia Phyllis with a donation of $2017 to help the residents of Marquette County. This money was raised in a number of different ways: $5 from every registration for the Muddy Marquette Mud run totaling $845, 25% of parking donations totaling $776, $166 from a free will donation during the Faith at the Fair church service, $150 from the Pie Social donations, and $50 from the adult showmanship classes where parents paid $5 each to “show” their child’s animal against other parents, and a private donation of $30. Parking cars proved to be a good fundraiser for other groups also, as $1552 was distributed to Westfield Girls Basketball, Montello FFA, Westfield FFA and Portage FFA. Next year’s fair is set for July 9-13. See you at the Fair!!!! (Photo submitted)

57th Annual Fireman's Chicken Bar-B-Q
The Village of Westfield Fire Department is again gearing up for their annual chicken barbeque. The 57th annual BBQ will be held on the Saturday before Labor Day, August 31, 2013, at Westfield Pioneer Park. The village firemen and wives have traditionally put out an exceptional chicken dinner and provide a full day of fun for the public.
The tasty meal consists of 1/2 chicken, barbecued over charcoal, just the way you like it, a dinner roll, baked potato and/or potato salad, a lettuce salad, cottage cheese, baked beans, and coffee or milk. Carryout meals are always available. Serving will begin at 3:00 pm.
At 9:00 am a softball tournament will begin. Come out and support your favorite team! Also, the Westfield Conservation trap shooting club will hold an open shoot. Clean your shotgun and come out and try your skill!
As always, there will be refreshments available. Beer and soda will be served all day, with hot dogs and burgers, available for the early attendees to snack on prior to the chicken dinner being served.
There will be live country music provided by The Strangers, beginning at 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm. RROK, Westfield’s local DJ, will continue his summer 2013 tour providing music for all ages starting at 7 pm until 10 pm.
The Westfield Fire Department uses the profits from this BBQ to update equipment on the department and in past years has put improvements into Pioneer Park. Past years a 24 x 72 shelter was erected, and the fire department teamed with the Westfield Lions Club to add a 40 x 100 shelter at the site. Also added over the years are 60 picnic tables, compliments of WFD and Westfield Lions Club. Another project was the sharing in the cost and construction of the playground equipment at the park.
Money from the proceeds of the BBQ has also been given to the construction of the new concessions building by the ball diamonds. In 2005 a new 4x4 grass truck/first response vehicle was put into service. In 2007 three memorial benches and a 3-flag display were set up at the fountain. In 2008 the department purchased, with the help of a federal grant, 10 new breathing apparatuses, 20 new air bottles and a compressor/cascade system for filling of the air bottles.
Last year the department erected a memorial bench and patio at the fire station in memory of 60 year member Jack Kruger.
The barbecue proceeds have additionally helped purchase and equip a state-of-the-art equipment vehicle. Also, the department, with the assistance of Brakebush Brothers, Inc., has purchased a replacement semi tractor to pull its 8,500-gallon water tanker.
There is a raffle being held, tickets are $5.00 each and will enter you in a drawing for cash prizes. See one of the firemen for your advance ticket. There will also be 50/50 raffles offered throughout the day.
There will be plenty of undercover seating available, so come out for the best barbequed chicken around and enjoy the 57th annual Westfield Fireman's Chicken BBQ.
